Reach Out 005 Mission – The Boranas

Location: Isiolo County
Duration: May – August 2021

In May 2021, PreachOut International embarked on Reach Out 005, focusing on Isiolo County, a diverse region known as the gateway to Northern Kenya. Isiolo is home to a mix of ethnic groups, with the Boranas and Somalis being the primary target nations for this mission. The region’s geopolitical importance stems from its position as a cultural and trade corridor between Kenya and neighboring countries, which also makes it a melting pot of traditional beliefs and Islamic influence.

Challenges Faced

The mission encountered unique challenges due to Isiolo’s socio-political dynamics. Religious tensions and cultural resistance from Islamic communities required the team to approach evangelism with wisdom and sensitivity. Additionally, logistical difficulties, including rough terrain and limited infrastructure, slowed down travel and outreach activities.

How the Team Overcame the Challenges

Through prayer and strategic planning, the team partnered with local Christian leaders who understood the cultural landscape. They adopted a relational approach, building trust by engaging in meaningful conversations and addressing community needs. Acts of kindness, such as distributing food to drought-stricken families and organizing medical camps, created opportunities to share the gospel.

Impact

The mission saw steady progress over the four months. Although numbers may not reflect immediate large-scale conversions, the seeds of faith were planted in many hearts. New believers from both Borana and Somali communities have since joined discipleship programs, with a growing interest in establishing fellowships in the area.

Reach Out 005 demonstrated PreachOut International’s commitment to reaching even the most challenging regions, embodying the love and message of Christ through actions and words. The mission reinforced the importance of patience, cultural sensitivity, and steadfast faith in ministering to unreached nations.
