In early 2023, PreachOut International embarked on Reach Out 009, a mission to bring the gospel to the Digo community in Kivuleni, a coastal region known for its rich Swahili culture and Islamic influence. This mission aimed to share the love of Christ with a group often overlooked in traditional outreach efforts.
Understanding the Digo People
The Digos are part of the larger Mijikenda community and are deeply rooted in their traditions and Islamic faith. Evangelizing in Kivuleni required a thoughtful approach that respected their cultural identity while presenting the transformative message of the gospel.
Challenges on the Mission Field
The mission team encountered resistance from some community members who viewed Christianity as a threat to their cultural and religious norms. Language differences and initial skepticism added to the challenges. Despite this, the team remained steadfast, relying on prayer and the guidance of local believers familiar with the Digo way of life.
Impact of the Mission
Through acts of service, such as offering basic medical assistance and organizing community clean-up initiatives, the team broke down barriers and earned the trust of many. By the mission’s end, several individuals made decisions to follow Christ, marking a significant breakthrough.
A small fellowship group was established to nurture these new believers, providing discipleship and support as they grew in their faith. The mission also inspired curiosity about Christianity among others in the community, paving the way for future outreach.
Hope for the Future
Reach Out 009 demonstrated that with patience, cultural understanding, and unwavering faith, even the hardest-to-reach communities can experience the transformative power of the gospel. The work in Kivuleni continues, with local believers taking on the mantle of discipleship to ensure that the seeds planted during the mission bear lasting fruit.
